IVF Public or Private

Private or public treatment?

A common question is whether to go for treatment at a private clinic, or at a public hospital. Based on our own anecdotal evidence, here are some of the differences between the two:

FactorPrivatePublic
CostsHigherLower, and there may be government grants available for citizens /permanent residents.
Waiting time for starting treatmentsFaster. Generally, once your tests are done, you can commence IVF on the next cycle.

Longer as there is usually a queue to get an appointment. It can take around 6 weeks to proceed with a fresh cycle, and a frozen cycle will take a further number of weeks.

Some public hospitals also require you to have failed IUI two times before you are allowed to embark on IVF

MedicationGenerally more expensive as the prices are not subsidised.Cheaper. Even as a private patient in a public hospital, the medications are still priced lower than in private clinics.
